In date 27 of May of 1998 the General Law of Telecommunications was promulgated No 153-98. This new law eradicates our old legislation of the year 1966 and aid to the country to modernize the half-full ones of regulation of this sector, adapting them to the parameters established in the area by international organisms as they are the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Union of Telecommunications (UIT).

New law 153-98 regulates in its totality the sector of the telecommunications defined as “the transmission and reception of signals by any electromagnetic means”, as well as its regulator organism, the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL). It is important to emphasize that the new law grants an obligatory contribution to the development of the telecommunications.
