In year 2001 the law number 125-01 was approved, this is the new General Law of Electricity, which constitutes the legal frame that regulates all the aspects relative to the production, transmission, distribution and commercialization of electricity, as well as the functions of the organisms of the State hereby created Law.

The new law establishes that the essential functions of the State are of normative character, promoter, supervise and regulator, functions that will be exerted by the State through the specialized institutions created by the law these are: The National Commission of Energy and the Supervision of Electricity.
